Experienced Defense Against Domestic Violence Charges in Maryland

Domestic violence is a criminal offense that is taken very seriously by Maryland law enforcement and prosecutors. These types of cases are often complicated and the stakes are quite high, since defendants could be prevented from living in the family home and with their children while the legal process unfolds. Fortunately, an experienced criminal defense lawyer can help.

With more than 20 years of experience, I – William R. Hall – have handled thousands of cases, including those involving violent crimes. Take advantage of our complimentary initial case evaluation to find out all of your available legal options.

What are the Penalties for Domestic Violence in Maryland?

There is no specific law which prohibits domestic violence in Maryland. However, defendants accused of assaulting or threatening an intimate partner, family member, child, or any household member can be charged with first- or second-degree assault.

  • First-degree assault involves intentionally causing or attempting to cause serious physical harm to someone else, as well as committing assault with the use of a firearm. It is considered a felony, punishable by a prison sentence of up to 25 years.
  • Second-degree assault covers less-severe forms of domestic violence, such as causing or attempting to cause bodily harm to another person. This type of assault is punishable by a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a maximum fine of $2,500.
  • On the other hand, stalking is considered an act of domestic violence. It is considered a misdemeanor, punishable by a maximum jail sentence of five years and a fine of up to $5,000.
